#R.I.P. Windows XP. Say Hi To Lubuntu.

#RIP Windows XP. The much beloved OS of all the computers from the late 1990s and early 2000s has finally run the good race and did well for itself. As much as I love FOSS, it was Windows XP that really opened the windows of computing to me. The possibility of the computer to do more than what it was designed to do when coupled with the amazing OS, opened up the development cycle and created the need for upgrades. Win XP sure has taken a lot of strides to go from XP to 8.1. It’s nostalgic when I think of XP, because we’re lucky to be the generation that was raised on technology and the internet. The computer and the internet perhaps have the most successful marriage of all times, and it is the OS that is the secret of that successful marriage. XP brought us the Windows Media Player, the yellow icons, the Start Menu and the Windows key, features that made you a proud XP user. The eulogy has been said and Microsoft has nailed the coffin in on Windows XP. ;( That said, it is now time to move on.

Ivan, talks about why Linux is the dark horse that is slowly taking over the game. Watch him rant and explain why Microsoft is afraid of Linux.

Now that XP is gone, people all over the world who continued to use it have either switched or upgraded. The few that choose to stick with it, now need to learn about someone who has worked so hard to befriend them. Exit XP. Enter Lubuntu. For everyone who does not know Lubuntu, it is an OS based on Linux that is “lighter, less resource hungry and more energy-efficient”. Weighing at about 683 MB, this OS is the perfect replacement for XP. Lubuntu, is based on Ubuntu which is obvious in the name. It is perfect for Win XP compatible hardware, and I’m talking less than 2GB RAM, Pentium Processors, low-spec graphic cards, and the whole lot. It also has replacements for almost all the programs you love on Windows. We have Libre Office, GIMP, Evince, VLC, Clementine, Terminal, a legit Software Centre, and WINE so you can run a couple of your XP must-haves and don’t feel all that unfamiliar. Also, Lubuntu doesn’t need an anti virus the last time I checked. That should be an added advantage.Try and re-purpose your old computer with Lubuntu, it doesn’t cost you a thing. People everywhere have anticipated the end of life for Win XP, and have made YouTube videos on replacing your desktop and making it more productive. For a generation that is raised on the internet, YouTube is the real deal. Check this video about what you can do with Lubuntu.

While we have moved on with time and upgraded to the latest, there is still place left for the old. The old does give way to the new, and so is XP to Lubuntu. Would you give it a try? Let us know in the comments below. Don’t forget to like and leave comments for TechReviewer if you were to try it out.
